We’re delighted that our longtime partner ’47 got some worldwide attention — including a prominent article in The Athletic section of The New York Times — for an impromptu photo of the Pope wearing one of their Chicago White Sox hats.

The happy moment came when a fellow White Sox fan, Gary DeStefano of Massachusetts, handed the Pope a new hat while greeting the pontiff at the Vatican shortly after getting married.
DeStefano was wearing a navy blue suit and an identical White Sox hat, and his bride Kelly DeStefano was standing next to him in her wedding dress.
“It was surreal,” DeStefano told The New York Times after a photo he posted of the Pope wearing the White Sox hat went viral.
Pope Leo XIV is a longtime fan of the Chicago White Sox and even attended the 2005 World Series. The team recently celebrated their ties to the Pope with a mural at their ballpark and made a jersey with POPE LEO and 14 on the back.
On June 14, the Pope delivered a video message that was aired to tens of thousands of spectators and fans at Rate Field where the Chicago White Sox play, where the young Robert Francis Prevost spent many hours of his childhood.
“He’s the ultimate influencer. What the Pope is wearing is the exact model that a style-conscious fan can get on ‘47brand.com. That’s pretty cool.” —Patrick Cassidy, Vice President of Marketing at ‘47, told The New York Times.
The White Sox cap that the Pope wore is part of ’47’s MVP collection, and it was the second time in a week that His Holiness sported a hat made by ’47.
A few days earlier, the Pope was seen wearing a Villanova Wildcats hat that his alma mater sent him as a gift. That Villanova hat was from ‘47’s Clean Up collection.
